By capturing 1 second of video footage every day, South African paediatric nurse, Rene Stone gives us a special glimpse into her life in Kenema, Sierra Leone, over the past few months. “I may be on the same continent, but I have experienced so many new things and met people from all around the world,” says Rene.
“I am a paediatric nurse and my position on this assignment is the Nursing Team Supervisor of the ICU. Some of the tougher days included days when we suspected and unfortunately confirmed Lassa Fever cases. Lassa Fever, like the Ebola virus, can easily be transmitted via person to person contact. Because Lassa Fever symptoms include fever, headache, weakness and muscle pain, it can often be mistaken for other common illnesses like malaria. Before I arrived here, there had only been 2 confirmed cases in the past year. To date, we have now had more than 4 confirmed cases in 3 months. That coupled, with the current Ebola threat, has everyone a bit on edge.”
