Additional Information / Shotlist Following the eruption from the flank of Mount Nyiragongo on 22-23 May, the town of Sake, 25 kilometers from Goma, hosts now an estimated population of 36,000 displaced people, among the 60,000 who looked for shelter in the bigger area of Kiroche. It means an additional pressure not only over the local health facilities, but also over the water supply.
MSF teams are providing free assistance in the reference health center of Sake for all patients needing primary healthcare. Over the last five days, from Friday 28 to Monday 31, MSF teams carried out over 1,000 medical consultations with displaced people, as well as host communities (common diseases such as malaria, diarrhoea and respiratory tract infections). In order to further support health assistance in Sake, MSF sent a boat from Bukavu with a donation of medicines that was taken by car from Goma’s port to Afia Sake’s health center.
MSF-supported Sake’s cholera treatment centre (CTC) has received some people with suspected cholera: from 29 to 31 May, 26 diarrhoea cases were admitted for observation. Eight patients were IDPs from Goma living in the informal settlements. Most of the cases were rapid tested and they were all negative. The last known positive case was 21 May. Nonetheless, a surveillance system has been put in place and field focal point for data transmission to the epidemiologist is established.

Cholera is endemic in the area and there is the concern that an outbreak can arise due to the poor conditions in which the displaced people live. In order to avoid that, MSF is providing clean water to the host and displaced communities, having distributed 243,000 liters in the first four days of intervention.
