MSF’s large Hospital of the Hill was opened a few months after the large influx of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh in August 2017. The Hospital on the Hill (HoH) was designed to respond to an emergency – the massive arrival of Rohingya fleeing the violence in Myanmar. Over time, the health care services shifted towards care for non-communicable diseases (NCD) for both Rohingya refugees and the Bangladeshi host population. A package with pictures and video interviews of staff and patient testimonies offers an overview of this facility and its impact on both the refugee and local communities.

We are treating in this hospital several types of disease. For example, in our inpatient department we are treating diabetes mellitus, hepatitis C, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma. We also treat many patients who are suffering from chronic liver disease and chronic kidney disease.

Dhaka is our capital city and Cox’s Bazar is far away from the city. There are no such good health facilities in Cox’s Bazar district. As we have a secondary healthcare facility, locals are receiving good treatment from here and they are happy with services we are providing.

During pregnancy, it is important for a mother to have antenatal care. Because by this antenatal checkup we can monitor the mother's physical condition. We can check if her all the vitals are okay. Even we can identify if she has other problems like hypertension, gestational diabetes and other complications. Foetal position, presentation – we can reassure the mother if all her vitals are fine or not. If we see during the antenatal check-up that the mother is fine, we reassure her that her baby’s position, her physical condition and everything is fine. But if we see any problems, we inform her: your baby is not in a good position; you will have to take precautionary measures during delivery. If we can do this to every mother, we will be able to reduce the neonatal death rate by proper antenatal check-ups.
