very few facilities providing secondary healthcare. For many refugees in the camp, it’s the only option to receive care in the intensive care unit or high dependency unit. We are also specialised in non-communicable diseases, which is a very unique profile in this setting.

Without the hospital in the setting, sooner or later they would die from you may think of as a simple disease like diabetes. People should not die because of diabetes – it’s treatable. Hypertension – it’s treatable. And it’s not even that complicated if you manage this properly.

MSF's Hospital on the Hill provides treatment for more than 2,800 patients with non-communicable diseases.

Every month this number increases by around 5 per cent.

It’s a big challenge. The growth is very, very high. There is going to be a need for more support for the NCD programme here: in terms of human resources, in terms of drugs and training to actually sustain the increasing number of patients coming to us.

Most of our patients are also affected by hepatitis C. We believe this is most likely because they have been neglected for so long back where they are coming from. They didn’t have access to healthcare. It was most likely there they contracted hepatitis C. The burden is high. Most of them present very late with chronic liver disease – cirrhosis – which is very difficult to manage.

Hospital on the Hill

When I came to this country, I couldn’t afford to buy medicines. I couldn’t afford it even in Myanmar.
We had to leave our home and we lost all our money.
To get decent treatment, I’d have to travel to Chittagong and it would cost 20,000 to 30,000 taka.
I don’t have any income.
Everything went up in flames in Myanmar.
But a year ago, when I heard from neighbours about this hospital, I started coming here.

We have a huge impact on the host community as well, because Cox’s Bazar district is a very interesting area of Bangladesh. It’s kind of a distant from the huge metropolises of Dhaka and Chittagong.

They don’t have easy access to healthcare either.

Receiving diabetes treatment at Hospital on the Hill

We have hospitals with similar facilities but their services are not good.

I’ve heard that this is an international organisation and that the service they provide is great.

People tell me positive things about the treatment they’ve received here.

My relatives come here too – they told me about this hospital – and that’s why I am here.
