COMMENTARY
The 20-bed inflatable hospital being set up by Médecins Sans Frontières in Arughat, northwest of Kathmandu, will admit it’s first patients within the next couple of days.

Behind me here, the first tent is the operating room. Then there’s the obstetrics unit, the maternity.
We’ll be treating all categories of patients: children, adults, men and women, obstetric cases – so maternity care
We’ll be performing follow-up surgery on earthquake wounds that have become infected, and emergency surgery such as cesareans and other casualties in the area.

COMMENTARY
Injured people continue to arrive. While they wait for the hospital to open, MSF medical staff are offering their services at the only healthcare facility functioning.

This facility here is replacing the health centre that was destroyed in the earthquake, and which provides healthcare to the 10,000 inhabitants living here in Arughat as well as the 40,000 people in the smaller, inaccessible villages in the surrounding health district.
To give you an idea of the healthcare services available since the earthquake: This area here is where women give birth, basically right next to the consultation area. So a woman in labour is settled here with just these 3 curtains for privacy.
A woman was here yesterday - it took her more than 3 hours to give birth and she was surrounded by loads of people. It was rather strange, but all went well in the end – she had a boy!

COMMENTARY
The emergency earthquake casualty phase is over. What people need now is more minor or follow-up surgery and post-operative care, or treatment for a chronic disease.

This man arrived about 4 hours ago with acute respiratory distress. He has a serious heart condition, what we call chronic heart disease, but he ran out of medication a few days ago, treatment to prevent decompensation. So he hasn’t taken medication for a few days and he’s now in a critical condition with acute pulmonary oedema which we’re treating with the necessary, specific drugs.
If we hadn’t intervened within the next half hour – his case was critical! - this man, this patient here would have undoubtedly died.
So this confirms that there’s unquestionable need for a facility able to provide secondary level healthcare.
