Additional Information / Shotlist Years of instability has plagued the medical sector in Ivory Coast. Doctors Without Borders, which had already worked in maternity hospitals in Duékoué and Abobo, was able to identify the urgency of responding to the lack of medical facilities and adequately trained personnel to support the care needs of mothers and their newborn. The rates of maternal and infant mortality are very high and appear as a real public health problem.
Since July 2014, in the Regional Hospital of Katiola, north of Bouake in the Hambol region, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is implementing a program of care for pregnant women and newborns, in partnership with the Ivorian Ministry of Health and Fight against AIDS (MSLS).
A major construction program, renovation and equipment of the technical platform has been implemented, accompanied by a staff training plan. Since early 2015, the Team building maternity attended nearly 300 births per month, about 10% by cesarean section. In July, while the work is completed in the hospital, a new phase of the program starts for supporting a peripheral health center network in order to decentralize access to care and bring down maternal mortality rates. In this region of Ivory Coast, about half of the childbirth still take place at home and distance from health facilities, in case of complications, create a life-threatening risk to the health of mother and infant.

Des années d’instabilité ont durement affecté le secteur médical en Côte d’Ivoire. Médecins Sans Frontières, qui était déjà intervenue dans les maternités de Duékoué et Abobo, a pu identifier l’urgence de répondre au manque de structures médicales et de personnel suffisamment formé pour prendre en charge les besoins de soins des futures mamans et de leur nourrisson. Les taux de mortalités maternelles et infantiles sont très élevés et posent un vrai problème de santé publique.
Depuis juillet 2014, dans le Centre Hospitalier Régional de Katiola, au Nord de Bouaké dans la région du Hambol, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) met en œuvre, un programme de soins pour les femmes enceintes et les nouveau-nés, en partenariat avec le ministère ivoirien de la Santé et de la Lutte contre le Sida (MSLS).
Un important programme de construction, de rénovation et d’équipement du plateau technique a été mis œuvre, accompagné d’un plan de formation du personnel. Depuis le début 2015, l'équiqe de la maternité a assisté près de 300 accouchements par mois dont environ 10% par césarienne. En juillet, tandis que les travaux s’achèvent dans l’hôpital, une nouvelle étape du programme démarre pour le soutien à un réseau de centres de santé périphériques afin de décentraliser l’accès aux soins et faire chuter la mortalité maternelle. Dans cette région de la Côte d’Ivoire, environ un accouchement sur deux a encore lieu à domicile et l’éloignement des structures de santé, en cas de complication, créé un risque vital, pour la santé de la mère et du nourrisson.
