Hands Off Our Medicine!
India is known as the ‘pharmacy of the developing world.’ Millions of people across the developing world are alive because of affordable medicines made in India. MSF depends on India for affordable generic medicines to treat many diseases and conditions; for example, more than 80% of the ARVs we use in our HIV programmes are from India. For years, pharmaceutical companies have tried to get India to roll back its progressive patent law, which puts people over profit and allows more affordable generic versions of medicines to be produced. Many of you recall the 7-year long Novartis case, during which Novartis attempted, but finally failed, to challenge Indian patent law, a huge victory for access to medicines. However, the recent discussions within the Indian government, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in relation to making amendments in India’s laws and policies indicate that India has started to show signs of caving under new and intensified pressure coming from big pharma, the US government, the EU and other wealthy countries. PM Modi has indicated that India needs to bring its patent system at par with global standards in order to keep relations with them. Such a move would mean more intellectual property protection for big pharma and would be disastrous for MSF and millions of people around the world that rely on affordable Indian generics.
