The current measles epidemics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the world largest and the biggest recorded in the country for years. It has been spreading out throughout the 26 provinces of DRC affecting more than 250 000 people and causing more than 5100 deaths. In 2019, MSF intervened in several part of the countries providing medical care for measles patient and leading measles vaccination campaign.

In response to the outbreak
MSF intervened in several parts of the country
providing medical care for measles patients.

The epidemiological data showed that there was a measles epidemiological threshold here. This is why we are here, to tackle two objectives: first to reduce mortality and morbidity and secondly, to strengthen surveillance of the epidemic. For example, we have the displaced people the south Sudanese refugees and local populations who are coming to us.

Most of them are serious cases: cases of respiratory distress, where immediate decisions must be made with reanimation measures or cases of severe dehydration… Others arrive in critical conditions and we have to stabilise them quickly. We are here to monitor complications. On the one hand, we treat and prevent these complications immediately, on the other hand, we isolate the patients to prevent the spread of the disease.

I first came with one of my children to the hospital because he had measles. And when I got home with him, my other child already had the symptoms of the disease. He had fever, cough, and pimples: he too had measles. Through the community relay, I knew I could bring my children here. So I came.

MSF teams also work in the community to raise awareness about measles
and lead vaccination campaigns against the disease in several locations.

Between January 2018 and October 2019,
MSF teams treated 46,870 patients
and vaccinated 1,461,550 children in 54 health zones.

The biggest measles epidemic in the world today is still ongoing.
Efforts to stop it must be increased.
