Honorine Dilyo, mother of 10 children, four of whom have died, had never given birth in a hospital or because of language barriers and lack of money. She has been in the waiting house for more than a month as she prepares to give birth.

In her village, money is scarce and her husband is unemployed. To give birth in a hospital, she says, you need clothes for yourself and the baby – things she cannot afford. Without them, she felt ashamed when visitors came, which kept her from seeking care. She also struggles to speak the national language, Sango. But after the training she has received, she says that if she becomes pregnant again, she will do everything she can to go to a health center.

Honorine Dilyo, Mère de 10 enfants dont 4 décédés. Elle n’a jamais accouché dans un hôpital ni dans un centre de santé faute de la barrière linguistique et également par manque de moyen. Elle est restée dans la maison d’attente ça fait aujourd’hui plus d’un mois qu’elle attend accoucher.

« Au village nous avons un problème de moyen (argent) et mon mari, lui ne travaille pas. Pour accoucher dans un hôpital, il te faut des habits pour toi et pour le bébé mais nous n’avons pas ce moyen. Sans moyen, sans habit, quand tu accouches et que les amis viennent te rendre visite, c’est la honte. Raison pour laquelle je n’accouche jamais dans un hôpital. Et aussi je ne parle pas bien la langue nationale. Avant ce qui m’empêchait c’était la honte vue que je n’avais rien mais aujourd’hui avec les apprentissages reçus, si prochainement j’ai une grossesse je ferai tout pour aller dans un centre hospitalier. »
