To educate the community of Eshowe in rural KwaZulu-Natal about COVID-19, MSF worked with community leaders of all types, including traditional leaders, traditional healers, government officials and religious leaders. The Eshowe project has long worked with community leaders to address disease stigma – mainly HIV and TB - and when the number of COVID-19 cases began to rise in July and August 2020, these relationships were a vital means of educating the population. One such partnership involved using the public announcement system in the Eshowe mosque to broadcast health promotion and anti-stigma messages on the town’s busiest street.
