Well, if lifesaving tests, treatments, and vaccines for the new coronavirus are developed, but only the wealthiest can afford them—that means everyone else will have to go without.

Drug corporations can certainly do something about it. They can commit to not seek, nor enforce patents on any medicines for COVID-19.

This is important because patents stand in the way of generic, lower cost versions of the drugs being made. And, when only one company produces a drug, that vastly limits the available supply and drives up prices.

Now, if Big Pharma won’t do the right thing, then governments can do something about it.

Governments must stand up to these corporations and override patents or not grant them to begin with.

That way, many more people can benefit from needed treatments or a vaccine.

Doctors Without Borders knows what’s at stake. We’ve seen the impact on sick people in low income countries of drug companies' profiteering. We’ve seen it happen to our patients with tuberculosis, and certainly with people living with HIV.
