Tribute slideshow video in memory of the victims

On May 12, 2020, the maternity ward of Dasht-e-Barchi hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan, was attacked in a deliberate–and unthinkable–attempt to kill mothers. Many patients were killed—the exact number is still being investigated—and more were injured. A Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) midwife was killed, as were two young boys. The maternity was a referral center, providing care for complicated deliveries and sick newborns since 2014. “It’s shocking,” said Frederic Bonnot, MSF’s head of programs in Afghanistan. “We know this area has suffered attacks in the past, but no one could believe they would attack a maternity. They came to kill the mothers.” MSF condemns this senseless act of cowardly violence and stands in solidarity with the Afghan people.
