UPDATE on the situation 24 MARCH 2020 -
Earlier today, a spokesperson from the Iranian Ministry of Health announced that MSF programme in Isfahan was stopped, as Iran didn't need extra inpatient & treatment capacity for severe forms of Covid. the spokesperson actually expressed its gratitude to MSF for its offer to help, but also stated that MSF hadn't discussed this programme with the relevant people in MoH (which doesn't correspond to truth).
Until further notice, we then consider that our intervention in Isfahan is now over.
important clarification: contrary to what some media reported, MSF staff has not been expelled from the country.

MSF intervenes in Iran

Iran is the third hardest-hit country in the world. Currently there are approximately 15,000 confirmed cases, with approximately 1,000 deaths so far. The Ministry of Health and the authorities are overwhelmed, and in terms of capacity and number of beds they are not able to overcome the situation. So it was completely natural for us to offer and provide support to the local authorities to deliver medical care to the Iranian people.

In the current situation—understanding that there is no vaccine, that diagnostic tools are extremely limited—and based on what seemed most pertinent, in so far as we could determine from a certain distance, unable to get a truly close reading of what was happening in the region, we proposed to deploy a mobile hospital.

This is a hospital that Médecins Sans Frontières has used for some 15 years, an inflatable hospital within which different medical activities can be managed, whether basic hospital care or emergency surgery.

So we will set up in the city of Isfahan, some hundreds of kilometres south of Tehran, and we will be next to a functioning hospital. So we will not be on the outskirts by ourselves, we will be directly linked to this hospital in order to increase its capacity.

Our teams in Mérignac are currently pulling together all the necessary equipment and materials, which means the inflatable hospital, the power system, and all the medicines, machines and biomedical equipment which will allow us to provide complete care.

L’Iran est le troisième pays le plus impacté. Il y a aujourd’hui environ 15 000 cas confirmés et environ 1 000 décès à ce jour. Le Ministère de la santé et les autorités sur place sont débordés, la capacité, le nombre de lits, on n’arrive pas à faire face à la situation... donc ça a été tout à fait naturel pour nous d’offrir, d’apporter un soutien, un support aux autorités sur place pour prendre en charge la population iranienne.

Dans la situation actuelle, compte tenu du fait qu’il n’y a pas de vaccins, que les capacités de diagnostic sont très limitées, pour nous ce qui était le plus évident et surtout à distance, parce qu’on n’a pas une lecture très fine de ce qui se passe dans la région où on va intervenir, on a proposé de déployer un hôpital de campagne. Médecins Sans Frontières a cet hôpital depuis une quinzaine d’années, c’est un hôpital gonflable dans lequel on peut conduire différents types d’activités, donc soit de l’hospitalisation simple ou encore de la chirurgie d’urgence.

On va donc se déployer dans la ville d’Ispahan, une ville qui est à quelques centaines de kilomètres au sud de Téhéran et on sera à côté d’un hôpital qui est déjà opérationnel donc on ne sera pas dans une ville en périphérie tout seul, on sera connecté pour augmenter la capacité hospitalière de l’hôpital.

Les équipes sur Mérignac sont en train d’assembler tous les équipements nécessaires, donc l’hôpital en tant que tel, le système énergétique qui est nécessaire, les médicaments utiles pour l’intervention de même que les appareils, les équipements biomédicaux qui vont permettre de faire cette prise en charge complète.
