Interview with Michel Peremans, MSF head of mission in Roraima.

The northern state of Roraima has been the main gateway in Brazil for the arrival of thousands of Venezuelan migrants and asylum seekers. The already poor health system of the state’s capital, Boa Vista, is overwhelmed with these new arrivals.

Our teams in Roraima work in shelters and with people living on the street or in precarious buildings. We provide medical consultations, access to water and sanitation, mental healthcare and health promotion activities.

[00:02 – 00:04] approximately 600 people
[00:05 00:07] who come from Venezuela into Brazil.
[00:08 – 00:09] And part of those people,
[00:09 – 00:10] they are in shelters.
[00:10 – 00:12] And these shelters are not always fantastic,
[00:13 – 00:14] but it’s acceptable, let’s say.
[00:15 – 00:15] Now the problem is that
[00:16 – 00:17] the majority of refugees,
[00:17 – 00:19] they are not in those shelters.
[00:19 – 00:20] They are just outside of the shelter.
[00:21 – 00:24] They are in abandoned houses, in the open air.

[00:39 – 00:40] health is key.
[00:40 – 00:41] Therefore, you need doctors.
[00:41 – 00:44] Now the problem is in Roraima, in the state,
[00:44 – 00:47] there is already a very weak health system,
[00:47 – 00:49] with not enough doctors for the population.

[00:54 – 00:55] it’s because we don’t have
[00:56 – 00:57] great conditions
[00:58 – 00:59] in that place,
[00:59 – 01:01] because there is a lot of dust,
[01:02 – 01:04] the water is dirty.
[01:05 – 01:08] Many reasons why
[01:08 – 01:09] we are getting sick.
[01:09 – 01:11] Our children are getting very sick.

[01:15 – 01:16] that there are more doctors coming.
[01:17 – 01:18] Medical people, who are trained
[01:19 – 01:20] and who can help this population.
[01:20 – 01:22] And when I say “population”
[01:22 – 01:24] it’s also the Brazilian population.
