In Jonglei State, South Sudan, fighting has resumed between government forces and opposition groups. Hospitals are being deliberately targeted, looted, bombed, and attacked by the warrying parties. No surgical capacity remains for more than 1 million people.

One year ago, on May 3, 2025, our hospital in Old Fangak was deliberately bombed by the South Sudanese army. Its coordinates had been shared with the authorities, and it was clearly identified.

Activities have never resumed, and the population has since left Old Fangak. In the months that followed, our hospital in Lankien was also bombed. In opposition-controlled areas, the health system is being systematically dismantled.

Hundreds of thousands of people are left without care, without protection, forced to flee again and again while floods engulf the region. MSF provides a vital share of healthcare in South Sudan.

But these repeated attacks undermine our ability to care for people over the long term.

These attacks are serious violations of international humanitarian law. The bombardments of Old Fangak and Lankien cannot go unanswered. We demand public acknowledgement of responsibility, clear explanations, and a formal commitment from the south Sudanese authorities to protect the hospitals.

Civilians and health structures must be protected. Those responsible for these attacks must be held accountable.
