After 18 months of siege, at the end of October 2025, El Fasher was eventually taken by the Rapid Support Forces.

And then many people tried to escape the city. Many were killed in the city or trying to escape.

In Tawila, one day, some of the volunteers, activists in the city, called me because they had just brought some dead bodies from the road between El Fasher and Tawila.
They were venturing outside the city into the RSF area on the road to El Fasher to look for the dead bodies.They would either bury them on the spot if they had enough time, or bring them back to Tawila.

And then they literally took hours, the whole morning, to dig a proper tomb respecting the Islamic rites and pray, to give a dignified burial to two dead bodies they had found the day before.

We are in a place which has been in a conflict for 20 years.

Maybe we will never know where most of the people have been buried, where their tombs are. Many people are maybe still in the bush somewhere. The volunteers who are looking for them are taking a road which has been emptied by gradual violence for years and is now nicknamed “the road of the air” because it's so empty and frightening.
