Close to 85% of the intensive care beds we’re using to treat patients with Covid-19 pneumonia are occupied.
The reason for asking MSF to set up this tent was precisely not to leave it until we run out of intensive care beds, but to try to constantly have beds available ready to be equipped for patients, rather than waiting until our backs are against the wall.

The order was placed on Thursday morning. The truck was loaded up during the day on Friday and it arrived late in the night. We’ve been on site setting up the tent since 3.30 this morning.
It’ll bridge the gap during the construction of the extension to Reims University Hospital’s intensive care unit. As soon as the building work’s finished, we’ll be able to take the tent down.

The aim of the operation is to temporarily increase
the number of intensive care beds available at the hospital

Everyday it’s a race against time requiring huge efforts to be able to open one or two more beds for treating patients with Covid-19 and provide the highly skilled medical care they need.
Patients admitted to the hospital have to stay for several days, and for some it can even be several weeks. Patients as well as the teams have to be provided support throughout this period.

The scale of the situation is unprecedented in terms of the number of patients admitted with extremely acute respiratory problems. It’s also unprecedented with regard to how long the epidemic’s lasting, as the unit has been treating patients with the virus for several weeks already. And it’s unparalleled due to the enormous mobilisation it’s taken to substantially increase the number of intensive care beds.

The equipment we lack is principally ventilators and syringe pumps. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this is just temporary, because we’re hoping the lockdown will limit the number of patients admitted to the hospital so we’ll never be short of beds and we can continue to provide treatment.

On est à peu près à 85% d’occupation en réanimation avec des patients présentant une pneumonie Covid-2019.
La logique de demander à MSF de monter cette tente, c’est justement de ne pas attendre la saturation de nos capacités de lits de réanimation et d’essayer d’avoir toujours à disposition des lits qu’il est possible d’armer et dans lesquels on peut mettre des malades sans attendre justement d’être au pied du mur.

La commande a été passée jeudi matin, le camion a été chargé vendredi dans la journée, le camion est arrivé dans la nuit de vendredi à samedi et nous sommes sur le chantier depuis 3h30 ce matin pour installer la tente.
Cette tente est dédiée uniquement à faire la jointure entre les travaux de réhabilitation de l’extension de la réanimation du CHU de Reims. A partir du moment où les travaux de réhabilitation de cette extension seront terminés, on pourra démonter la tente.

L'opération a pour but d'augmenter temporairement
la capacité du service de réanimation de l’hôpital

C’est une course qui se fait chaque jour avec l’ouverture d’un ou deux lits supplémentaires au prix d’énormes efforts pour être en mesure de prendre en charge les patients atteints du Covid et particulièrement aussi d’être en mesure de leur fournir des soins très spécialisés.
Un patient qui rentre pour une hospitalisation va rester plusieurs jours, voire des semaines, hospitalisé. Donc il va falloir accompagner les patients, les équipes sur cette durée.

L’ampleur de la situation est inédite par le nombre de malades qui arrivent avec des atteintes respiratoires très sévères. Elle est inédite par la durée de cette épidémie puisque ça fait déjà maintenant plusieurs semaines qu’on accueille des patients dans le service pour cette pathologie. Et elle est unique par la mobilisation qu’il a fallu avoir pour augmenter de façon très importante le capacitaire des lits de réanimation.

Les équipements qui nous manquent, c’est essentiellement des ventilateurs et des pousse-seringues. C’est quelque chose qu’on espère temporaire puisqu’on espère que les mesures de confinement vont permettre de limiter l’afflux de malades et nous permettre de finalement ne jamais être dépassés dans notre capacité à.
