In May 2026, the Watsan teams in Kule Refugee Camp organized the annual Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) campaign. As part of malaria prevention efforts, IRS involves spraying the interior walls of living structures, latrines, kitchens & animal sheds with approved insecticides that kill or repel mosquitoes when they rest on treated surfaces. This helps reduce indoor mosquito prevalence and lowers the risk of malaria transmission within the community.

The campaign is conducted once a year before the peak of the malaria season. The protective effect of the insecticide lasts for approximately three to six months, providing coverage throughout the period of highest malaria transmission.

To implement the campaign, MSF recruited around 70 members of the refugee community, 40% of whom were women. Following a one-week training program to ensure that all safety procedures were properly understood and applied, the teams carried out the spraying of more than 11,300 residential structures in Kule 2 over a 20-day period.
