MSF teams around the world and in Kenya, face the reality that medical care is not just to save lives but also to alleviate suffering. In Homa Bay, MSF offers primary and secondary healthcare for chronic disease patients to address the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, managing some patients with life-limiting diseases and at end of life too. To enhance quality of care for these patients, since 2021, MSF in collaboration with the local health authority, have been providing palliative care for patients in Homa Bay. MSF is strengthening this patient‑centred continuum of care through improved systems and a dedicated palliative mobile team to ensure ongoing support from hospital to home. The home-based care seeks to provide individualised palliative services for patients at home; within the families and communities they come from. Patients eligible for palliative care admission include those with conditions that causes chronic severe pain, severe limitation of movement, oxygen dependency, need for prolonged enteral nutrition (tube feeding).
