Thousands of civilians were forced to flee into the bush and swamplands, or live in a fortified camp near Bentiu, under the protection of UN peacekeeping troops.

This is Bentiu, it is probably one of the worst camps in the world. It’s got around 125,000 people.

Médecins Sans Frontières teams provide medical assistance to the civilians living in the camp, who are entirely dependent on humanitarian aid for their survival.

With a camp population of roughly 125,000, only half have received proper housing, and with the rainy season beginning, living conditions are deteriorating.

On top of that, the population is only receiving nine litres of water per person per day, far below the accepted minimum standard of 15 litres for each person.

Since the beginning of this year, Médecins Sans Frontières has scaled up its medical operations, opening a new emergency room and child health wards for nutrition and other illnesses.
