What does MSF have to do with Search and Rescue operations!!

We went down to sea because people died at the rhythm of a war.
All the search and rescue operations at sea are coordinated by the Italian Coast Guard, which tells us where and when to intervene and in which harbor driving people rescued.
Rescues happen in two ways: in most cases the Italian Coast Guard receives an SOS and sends the nearest ship.
In other cases we see a boat, we inform Italian Coast Guard who tell us what to do.
To do search and rescue our ships are positioned in international waters in front of the Libyan coast because there shipwrecks occur.
From there we look for directions from the Italian Coast Guard, ready to intervene.

Every day we assist hundreds of people on crumbling tenders and boats.
There are so many women and children.
On our ships, in our clinics we treat dehydrated people, cases of hypothermia, cases of serious burns due to fuel, salty water where people were immersed during the trip.
We also treat many victims of torture and violence.

Sea Taxi? Rather an ambulance.

Europe has closed all borders, leaving dangerous voyages at sea as the only alternative.
So people fleeing from wars, violence and poverty are forced to rely on smugglers.

European politics are the best friend of smugglers.

All fleeing people are forced to pass through Libya, but Libya is hell.
People are locked in detention centers with very little access to water and food.
Many are beaten, exploited, tortured.
In centers and on board we listen to their testimonies and cure their physical and psychological wounds.
Everyone prefers to risk life at sea rather than die slowly in Libya.

And you, wouldn’t you try to escape from such an hell?

You cannot ferry Africa to Italy… bring them to Malta or Tunisia!

We don’t choose the destination port, but the Italian authorities tell us where to bring rescued people.
By law, it must be a country where it is possible to apply for protection without the risk of withstanding abuse or persecution.

Ensuring safety to those seeking protection is a must.

Instead of spending money in search and rescue operations,
help them in their own countries!!!

The expenditure of research and rescue activities at sea and of all our migration projects in Italy accounts for only 1.2% on the total of Doctors Without Borders projects in the world.

We help them first of all in their countries of origin, but if they are forced to risk life at sea we cannot keep watching.
