Currently overwhelmed by a cholera outbreak out of control, Yemen is enduring the grave consequences of more than two years of a war that have left its health system in tatters, with limited human capacity and resources to sustain the still functional facilities. MSF’s Cholera Treatment Center (CTC) in Abs town, in the northern Hajjah governorate, is the facility of the organization receiving the highest number of cases across the country.
The cholera crisis highlights the urgent need to scale up the assistance in Yemen and the specifics of the situation in Abs, where MSF teams witness on a daily basis the large scope of the medical and humanitarian needs, are applicable to the rest of the country.
Abs reflects many of the direct and indirect effects of the conflict: near the frontlines, the region receives insufficient aid, hosts a large number of uprooted populations and is home to constant armed clashes and serious violations of the international humanitarian law such as the bombing of a hospital supported by MSF last year.
