Never before has the concept of refuge been so put at risk by political decisions, practices and agreements that are jeopardizing the right to seek protection everywhere in the world. With the EU/Turkey deal, Europe and its member states have created a dramatic precedent in history, showing to the world that you can buy your way out from your obligations on asylum: with the deal with Turkey, Europe has institutionalized and incentivized a ‘push them back’ strategy which has dangerous consequences for people attempting to reach Europe, and for refugees all over the world. As long as conflicts, violence, persecution will continue, people will continue to flee in search of safety and better conditions. They should have the right to do it and all the countries have the moral and legal obligation to provide them with the right to protection. There is no way out from asylum. MSF, which is assisting refugees in projects around the world, is left confronting the possibility that we are witnessing the death of the Refugee Convention. Will the concept of the refugee cease to exist? Will this be the last refugee day?
