We run two projects here:

emergency paediatrics
and malnutrition stabilisation.

In 2018, during the malaria peak,

we saw four times more patients
coming to this project.

450 admissions per week.

We often have
two or three children per bed.

He was admitted four days ago
to the intensive care unit

with severe acute malnutrition
and severe bronchopneumonia.

Later we realised that he had cholera

and we refered the patient
to the cholera treatment centre.

As they brought the patient back,

the temperature was at 35.1C,
which is hypothermia.

We are using the survival blanket
to correct the hypothermia.

Now the hypothermia is OK,

but the difficulty is in breathing,
so that’s why the child is on oxygen.

The patient is improving, for now.

I have four children of my own
and four of my older sister. Eight.

Mohammed is my little sister’s son.
It was her eighth pregnancy.

He comes from Girgir.

She was sick,
and they gave her a transfusion.

She died about 10 days after the birth,
leaving her son.

I took care of him
and I tried to breastfeed him.

But I didn’t have any milk
so the hospital gave us artificial milk.

When I gave him the milk, he began
with diarrhoea and losing weight.

So I brought him here
and they admitted him.

He has continued to grow,
he walked at 11 months.

I took seven of my children
to the hospital where MSF works.

I have 13 children and two wives.

I am a farmer and a shoemaker.

That’s my only source of income.

If the children need uniforms or books,
I pay for them with those earnings.

have had cases of malaria and cholera.

The biggest problem
is the lack of support

from the community leaders
and the community youth.

We are telling them
that it is not part of our activities

to do sanitation and the rest.

The only thing we can do is to tell them

to sanitize their environment.

But they are lacking support
from the government and the rest.
