My first mission was in Africa, in Sierra Leone, and my last mission was two months ago, in Afghanistan, in Khost, where I've been returning in total nine times.

Ma première mission c’était en Afrique, en Sierra Leone et ma dernière c’était il y a deux mois, en Afghanistan, où je suis retournée au total 9 fois.

The first time I went there was six years ago in 2012, and I've been returning every year at least once.
La première fois c’était il y six ans, en 2012, et j’y suis retournée au moins une fois par an depuis.

And it's also very special for me personally to have been there since the beginning of the project.
C’est aussi très particulier pour moi d’avoir participé au projet depuis le tout début.

I physically saw the first baby being born there and now, MSF is managing in a very special place on the world map, a maternity where we manage 2,000 births a month.
J’ai vu le premier bébé né là-bas et maintenant – MSF gère un endroit très spécial- une maternité où nous avons deux miles naissances par mois.

Afghanistan is one of the countries with the highest maternal mortality, and also neonatal mortality in the world.
L’Afghanistan est l’un des pays avec le plus haut taux de mortalité maternelle et infantile dans le monde.

When MSF went to look into the Khost province, they saw that many mothers unnecessarily died, and that there was also a severe lack of qualified staff.
Quand MSF s’est rendue dans la province Khost, ils ont découvert que beaucoup de femmes mourraient pour de mauvaises raisons et qu’il y avait un énorme manque de staff qualifié.

So, no doctors, very few midwives, very few hospitals, and many mothers and babies unnecessarily dying, and that's why MSF decided to go there.
Donc pas de docteurs, seules quelques sages-femmes, très peu d’hôpitaux et beaucoup de mamans et de bébé qui mourraient pour de mauvaises raisons et c’est pourquoi MSF a décidé d’y aller.

So, first of all, MSF is offering quality care and for free, which is a major reason why women and families want their wife to deliver there.

Donc d’abord, MSF offre des soins de qualité gratuits, ce qui est un des raisons principales pour lesquelles les femmes et les familles veulent accoucher là-bas.

And I think, also one of the major factors that played a role is the fact that it's a hospital ‘women for women’. So, almost all of our staff are female.

Un des facteurs qui a joué un rôle c’est le fait que ce soit un hôpital ‘pour les femmes, par les femmes’. Donc presque tout notre staff est féminin.

And the Afghani culture, especially in the rural areas, is still with a very strict separation of the sexes.
Et la culture Afghane, spécialement dans les zones rurales, est encore très stricte avec la séparation des sexes.

So, from the moment we opened, we said all midwives will be female, all doctors in the maternity are female, and so this also offers the women a context where they feel at ease.

Depuis l’ouverture [de l’hôpital], on a voulu que toutes les sages-femmes et tous les médecins soient des femmes. Cela crée un contexte dans lequel les femmes se sentent à l’aise.

But in the hospital, it's like we are in kind of island of peace and quiet, and women taking care of women, a sisterhood of women.

L’hôpital, c’est une sorte d’île de paix et de tranquillité, et les femmes prennent soin les unes des autres, une solidarité feminine.

So, they talk to the patient, and they say, "Ay Zma Khory," which means, "Hey, my sister." So, just the way of addressing the patient is, "You're my sister. I will take care of you."
Elles s’adressent aux patientes en disant “….” Ce qui veut dire “Hey ma sœur”. Donc déjà rien que dans la façon de s’adresser aux patientes c’est “ Tu es ma sœur, je vais prendre soin de toi”.

This also has, as a consequence, the few times that unfortunately, we lose a mother a year, the staff is also very much affected. The staff has tears in their eyes, are crying, are sad together with us and together with the family.
Mais il y a aussi des conséquences négatives : le peu de fois où, malheureusement, on perd une maman, le staff est très affecté. Le staff est en larme, nous sommes toutes tristes avec la famille.

In Europe, or where I work, we have the impression that Afghani women are victims. All this is partially true, but I also met very strong Afghani women who are doctors, who are studying, who are really good midwives, who save babies and mothers every day. And this is something you never hear in the world news.
En Europe, où je travaille, nous avons l’impression que les femmes Afghanes sont des victimes. C’est en partie vrai mais j’ai aussi rencontré des afghans qui sont médecins, qui étudient, qui sont de très bonnes sages-femmes, qui sauvent des bébés chaque jour. Et c’est quelque chose qu’on entend jamais aux infos.

And I think everybody who has worked there will say the same thing, is you plant seeds and you get flowers. You give people opportunities and they take the opportunities. This is very gratifying.
Tous ceux qui ont travaillé ici dissent la même chose. Si tu sèmes des graines, tu récoltes des fleurs. Tu offres aux gens des opportunités et ils les prennent, c’est très gratifiant.

I teached someone the first caesarian section and then one year later, she's doing everything herself. During the night, just calling me to say, “Hi. I'm going to do a caesarian section.” I'm asking, “Are you fine? Should I come?” She says, “No, no, no, you trained me. I will be fine. If there's any problem, I will call you.” Usually she doesn't call. This is really gratifying.

J’ai enseigné à quelqu’un comment faire sa première césarienne et un an plus tard, elle les fait elle-même. La nuit, elle m’appelle juste pour me dire : “Salut, je vais faire une césarienne” et je lui demande : “ Tout va bien tu veux que je vienne ?”, elle répond : “non, non, tu m’as formée, ç ava aller. Si il y a un problème, je t’appellerai.” Et en général, elle n’appelle pas. C’est très gratifiant.

Yeah. You plant seeds, you get flowers and occasional rose.
Oui, tu sèmes des graines et tu récoltes des fleurs, et parfois même des roses.
