Je suis partie avec Médecins Sans Frontiètres en Afghanistan à Khost.
I went to Khost, in Afghanistan with Médecins Sans Frontières

C’est une zone tribale pashtoune. MSF gère un grosse maternité là-bas.
It is a Pashtun tribal area. MSF runs a big maternity hospital there.

C’était ma première mission sur le terrain, comme ça avec une ONG
It was my first mission in the field, with an NGO

Elle y est allé pour une raison particulière
She went there for a specific reason

Les gens n’aiment pas du tout être pris en photo

MSF a vraiment du mal à montrer au monde extérieur ce qu’ils font là-bas et l’importance que ça a.
MSF has difficulties to show the outside world what they are doing there and its importance.

Le dessin permet de bifurquer de cette contrainte
Drawing makes it possible to overcome this constraint

J’avais un peu peur au début, je me disais, si elles n’aiment pas les photos, est-ce que le dessin ça va pas être aussi mal vu ? Le fait que je les regarde fixement... ça a vraiment permis de créer tout de suite un rapport. Elles reconnaissaient les unes et les autres sur les dessins mais en même temps ce n’est pas aussi intrusif

At first, I was a little scared. I thought, if they do not like pictures, what about drawing? The fact that I’m staring at them. [But drawing] really created a link right away. They recognised each other in the drawings but at the same time it is not that intrusive.

The comic is inspired by stories from the maternity

Pour moi la burqa c’était pas du tout un truc terrifiant, j’avais hâte de dessiner ça en fait parce que tous ces bleus, les plis, tout le travail, c’est brodé tout ça... Il fallait que je mette en scène une des deux qui a mal, donc qui est enceinte et qui est pliée en deux parce qu’elle a vraiment mal au ventre. C’était un défi graphique mais que j’ai trouvé intéressant de représenter l’expression corporelle etc... alors qu’on est sous un grand truc de tissus

For me, drawing the burqa wasn’t at all intimidating. I was actually eager to draw it. All these blues, the folds, all the embroidery work, all of this.I had to draw [a woman] who was in pain. She is pregnant, and she is doubled over due to the pain in her belly. It was an artistic challenge but I found it interesting to represent her physical position while she was under this big piece of cloth.

Ce que je trouve intéressant, c’est de profiter de ce que je sais faire mais de pouvoir en faire quelque chose d’utile, entre guillements. Donc là c’était vraiment la grosse expérience et donc j’ai adoré et j’aimerai bien refaire ça aussi souvent que possible.

What I find interesting is to take advantage of what I can do and to be able to do something useful. So that was really a big experience and I loved it and I would like to do it again as often as possible.
