launched an offensive on Hodeidah in June 2018

Since the fighting here started we’ve seen a sharp increase in the number of wounded patients from the area near Mocha, where the main hospital is unable to provide surgical care.
So we’ve opened a hospital with a surgical unit in Mocha where we can treat the war wounded and patients with other injuries. The hospital’s 120km from the town of Hodeidah but it admits wounded patients from villages closer to Mocha too where the frontline is.
I saw a 12-year old child who’d stepped on a mine. The lower half of his body was pitted with shrapnel from the mine. The child was brought straight to our hospital from about 80km away. We gave him emergency treatment and operated on him to clean his wounds. He’s going to stay in our hospital in Mocha for a least a week so we can continue treating him.
We opened the hospital in Mocha because we saw a rise in the number of severely wounded patients arriving from the frontline that was getting increasingly further away from our hospital in Aden.
So we set up a hospital in Mocha to be nearer the frontline.

When I went to the hospital in Aden I was surprised to see how many children and adolescents there were compared to my last visit a year ago.
Kids with bullet wounds, or who had sustained injuries from explosive devices and mines.
North of the frontline and in the town of Hodeidah itself, people, and more particularly the war-wounded, are in need of assistance. There’s still fighting near the town and in the surrounding area.

The town and the zone around it are also being hit by airstrikes, so lots of wounded civilians require medical care.

MSF is exploring the opportunity of opening a surgical project in Hodeidah to help the town’s inhabitants.
