Since 2013, MSF has been providing emergency surgical care in Bangui, and in June 2017, MSF opened its own 60-beds structure, known as the SICA hospital. Specialized in orthopedic and visceral surgery for adults, SICA also provides physiotherapy and mental health support to trauma patients in order to facilitate their recovery.

At the SICA hospital, 75% of the patients were victims of road accidents or wounded by bullets or knives. Fractures are often so complex that they require external fixation and sometimes even the amputation of the damaged limb. In order to avoid long-term consequences particularly due to a bad repositioning of the bones or to a too important weakening of the muscles, physiotherapists must treat patients as early as possible, as soon as they leave the operating theatre or their passage at the emergency department. However, whatever the treatment, regaining mobility and rehabilitation processes often last for months or even years.
