I was sitting with my grandmother and my cousins.
I don’t know what hit us.
My leg was wounded.

Zaynab and her brothers and sisters lived with their father and grandmother in Mosul.
In October 2016, the battle began to retake Mosul from so-called Islamic State.

Papa
The house collapsed on us.
I grabbed my daughters,
and took them down to the river.
I carried Zaynab because her leg was bleeding.
I was holding her in my arms,
I’d tied a rope around us to keep her close to me.

Her father managed to pay for the only private hospital in the region able to operate on his daughter
But Zaynab still can’t walk. She’s now receiving treatment in MSF’s
reconstructive surgery hospital in Amman in Jordan

Zaynab
The doctor removed the shrapnel from my leg and my hip.
He put a fixator on my leg and after a while he removed it.
I had three operations,
on my hip and my twisted knee and one to lengthen my leg.

Papa
Zaynab’s condition has improved a lot since we got here because she can play with other children,
go to school
and have physiotherapy.
She’s opened up. It’s doing her good.

I hope Zaynab will recover,
that she’ll get better
and be able to carry on going to school,
that she’ll be reunited with her brothers and sisters in Iraq
so Suha, Noor, Zaynab, Mohammad and I can rebuild our lives.
