What is newborn care? Newborn care is very simple and very efficient. It includes care of the cord, early initiation of breastfeeding in order to prevent dropping of the sugar level which can have some serious effects on the baby. Similarly, some vaccinations in order to prevent some very serious infections in the future. And there is a tendency of bleeding especially in newborns so simply vitamin K can prevent these complications.
And the most important thing, especially for the premature babies, is to maintain the body temperature in the normal limits. This can be done very easily through skin-to-skin contact with the mother and similarly with the help of a warmer.

This is the resuscitation area, linked with the labour room where babies receive care within seconds. The first five minutes are really critical for the babies and most of the babies are born without complications, so they just receive the routine care like cord care, vaccinations, and then the babies are shifted with the mothers.

Newborn care is very simple but some babies need more intensive care: cardiovascular support in the form of oxygen, intravenous fluids and phototherapy for neonatal jaundice.

This baby was delivered through emergency caesarean section and after giving some initial care, the baby was transferred to the Newborn Unit. Now we are giving the baby oxygen therapy for respiratory support and intravenous fluids for good perfusion and to prevent hypoglycemia. The baby it is showing some good response and hopefully the baby will be ok in a couple of days.

In this inpatient department, the babies stay with their mothers. At birth, we give simple care -early initiation of breastfeeding, kangaroo mother care and vaccination for the prevention of various infections. The babies are stable and the babies are ready to go home in a while.

Newborn care is very basic and simple. It is crucial for the immediate and long term health of the baby. It is the right of every baby. Just by giving routine care to the baby, we can reduce the newborn mortality rate and we can give healthy babies to the society.
