Today, more than 180,000 people are seeking safety in camps under the protection of the United Nations (UN), known as Protection of Civilian (PoC) sites.

For the vulnerable people living in one such camp in Bentiu, the relative safety found within comes at the expense of undignified living conditions and exposure to life-threatening diseases.

TITLE : SARAH DUOTH
"I lost my leg on a landmine during the conflict against Sudan government.
[before South Sudan gained Independence]

I felt unsupported in the beginning of the incident because I had to use a stick
but now it's different because I have the prosthetic leg.

When I walk or stand among people with it I feel comfortable.

We faced a lot of challenges until we arrived here in Bentiu PoC.
Water shortage is the major problem starting November [2018].

If you are a vulnerable woman like me, they can just throw your jerry can away.

Even if I’m a vulnerable person, I decided to take this risk [to come to the PoC].

In fact I didn't have the choice because death was everywhere.

If you are out of the camp to bring black sand, whether you are a kid or woman you could be raped. They don’t leave anyone alone.
Outside the PoC it's not safe, not good at all.

It’s painful, many women keep collecting firewood from outside of the camp.
They have nothing to feed their children, what else can they do?

During the whole night, people don’t sleep here, any time robbers can come and point a gun on you.

We have some people killed in PoC while people say that we are under protection of the United Nations.

If the international community wants to help us, then their interests can be put behind us,
let the implementation of peace go in the right process and hopefully we can take a break from war."
