Donald Trump’s case for the wall is primarily focused 2,000 km south of the border, in Honduras. The majority of migrants who wish to enter the United States come from this Central American country. Tages-Anzeiger cartoonist Felix Schaad and journalist Yves Magat followed teams from Médecins Sans Frontières who provide care for Hondurans in their country and on their migration north.

SUBJECT
Nueva Capital, a suburb of Tegucigalpa in Honduras. The homicide rate here is a hundred times higher than in Switzerland. There is still no running water or paved streets.

The violence is invisible but rampant. Racketeering, kidnappings, and trafficking force many people flee to the United States.

The Tages-Anzeiger cartoonist, Felix Schaad, with his pencils, visits the only clinic in the district built two years ago by Médecins Sans Frontières.

On average, a woman is murdered every day in Honduras. Rape is weaponized by the all-powerful gangs, the Maras, to terrorize Honduran citizens. And domestic violence is commonplace.

Médecins Sans Frontières offers women essential psychological support.

A thousand kilometres further north, in Tenosique, this refuge is the first stop in Mexico on the road to the United States. Since its opening in 2011, this place, founded by Franciscans, has welcomed 100,000 people. The majority of them fled the violence in Honduras.

01'44'': WOMAN (Spanish): “My daughter was two years old. We were all in church. People came in and killed her daddy.”

01'54'': HOMME (Spanish): “Unfortunately, my harvest was bad last year. I couldn't pay what the gang was asking for, so I had to leave.”

Every day an information session is organized by Médecins Sans Frontières to help migrants travel north. It is important to identify the new dangers they will encounter here in Mexico as well.

Here in Tenosique, migrants board the freight trains they call the Bestia. To reach the American border, they will have to change trains dozens of times. The journey is extremely dangerous.
