In 2016 180,000 people arrived in Italy. The migrant reception system can no longer cope.
This results in people deciding not to stay in Italy and crossing over the border to go to northern Europe. The border between Italy and France is one of the places where they try to cross.

Living conditions for people blocked there are really tough and certainly not respectful. Many people, including some of the most vulnerable, are not being looked after.

The situation on the border is complicated, but that’s been the case for months.

We’re in a situation with the French police doing everything in their power to push back the migrants to the Italian side of the border. So the migrants try to avoid the police by crossing over the mountains. They end up in the Roya valley, on the French side of the border.

As the situation deteriorates, it’s harder and harder to cross the border. The migrants are crossing further north and now we see people arriving in Briançon.

So far in 2017, over ten people have lost their lives trying to cross the border.

The situation is really not good.

The problem is that they arrive in France very weak because they’ve had to walk for several days in the mountains before getting here. So they’re totally exhausted and, in some cases, injured because when they fall they break something.

For most of them crossing the border and then arriving in Roya, their only option is to count on people’s solidarity, that people will give them shelter because nothing’s been organised to look after them.

No provision has been made yet. We’re still in the situation where we see people continuing to arrive with nothing done to help them. It’s quite unacceptable.
