Numerous families fleeing Boko Haram and military operations continue to seek refuge in camps in Maiduguri.
They find themselves stuck at a ‘Screening Point’ just outside Maiduguri, often stranded there for weeks.

The screening point is an abandoned village, so there are no more houses. There is a few walls up but there is no more roof on anything so there is no protection from the rain. There is an open well which is very dirty, there is one hand pump which has been fixed with a partner that we called in.
So it’s very complicated. They’re just living outside in the rain, sun, whatever the conditions are, they’re just suffering, just being there with no shelter.
And so they are held outside the city because they are supposed to be screened by the military, have their background checked and everything, and also they are supposed to enter an IDP camp.
So the problem is supporting those people which is what we were doing today, we’re providing food and water and do mobile clinic for health surveillance.
Not only are the living conditions harsh, people are not safe at the screening point either.
In April and March there was a Boko Haram attack on this locate when there was also IDPs waiting to enter the city. So it’s a very tense situation for them. Most of them don’t sleep at night, because they are so scared. So it’s a very complicated situation for those people.
Once transferred to a camp inside Maiduguri, much of what these people need simply isn’t available.
The last group that entered, which was about 2,400 people, they were put in a camp called Custom House but today they’re lacking 600 shelters in that camp. So, even though people within the city are safe, the military is ensuring the security of these people, but they have no proper shelter today. So in the camps, they register for food distribution, they have access to health care, but still no shelters, they only have some makeshift shelter with plastic sheeting and whatever they find, but it’s not enough.
People continue to arrive at the Screening Point the whole time?. There are around 500 new arrivals each week.
