This baby girl is three months old
When she arrived at the MSF hospital in Khamer, she weighed 1.7kg

They actually got on the back of a truck which was 3 hours away because the mother’s very poor and doesn’t have any money to come to the hospital.

Her mother is also malnourished, and no longer able to breastfeed

People often think malnutrition is the result of food not being availble. But it’s more an economical problem where people can’t afford the food available.

Mothers stop breastfeeding shortly after giving birth to get back to work
Without the protecting qualities of breastmilk, children are more likely to fall sick

Malnutrition was already present in Yemen in March 2015, before the beginning of the conflict

Living conditions in the country have been dificult for a long time. There was already a high level of malnutrition but the war has clearly made the situation worse. Somea areas are more affected than others, particularly remote valleys with very isolated communites.

After three weeks in hospital, the little girl now weighs 2.2 kg

We’ve been giving her special milk to help increase her weight. We’ve treated her for hypothermia, now her temperature is stable and she’s much more active than when she was when she came in. You can hear her crying in the background.
