The situation in Tripoli remains extremely concerning for all civilians, as heavy, indiscriminate shelling and airstrikes continue in densely populated areas of the city. Since the onset of the fighting, over 440 have been killed, over 2,100 wounded, and nearly 60,000 have been displaced. Among the most vulnerable are over three thousand refugees and migrants trapped in detention centres and who are at a severe risk of being caught in the crossfire. These people are unable seek safety on their own, and their provision of food, water, medical care and other essential services have deteriorated from already poor levels seen before the fighting.
Since fighting erupted on 4 April, MSF has pled for the international community to evacuate refugees and migrants trapped in or near the conflict areas to the only place where they’ll be safe – out of Libya. So far, only 455 people have been moved out of the country, while at least 300-400 have been intercepted at sea, forcibly returned to Libya in violation of international law, and are now trapped in the same dangerous conditions of detention.
