Since May 2017, dozens of thousands of refugees from the Central African Republic (CAR) have arrived to the towns of Gbadolite and Mobayi-Mbongo and to the rural area along the Ubangi River of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Nord Ubangi province) after fleeing conflict in their country. They now outnumber the local population in some villages. The refugees first began to arrive after fighting broke out between armed groups in CAR’s Basse-Kotto prefecture. MSF launched operations in September to support the local health system until the end of March 2018 and assist both the refugees and the host community. In around six months of intervention, the teams provided more than 38,600 medical consultations, admitted more 3,970 inpatients, and treated nearly 2,000 children under five for malnutrition. MSF teams also vaccinated 20,000 children under five against measles, as part of a campaign against a range of other diseases.
