Ruth, a mother of four, left Honduras five months ago to escape a life of daily violence. Her husband was kidnapped, and released, and her family had to flee because their lives were in danger. Their journey has been very difficult; they had to sleep on the street and they faced assaults, but MSF has been able to help them with medical and mental healthcare.

Additional Information / Shotlist 500.000 people cross into Mexico every year. People in the Northern Triangle of Central America (NTCA)- El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala), forced to leave their countries because of gang violence and poverty, are increasingly prevented to reach the US to ask for asylum and they find themselves trapped at the border in Mexico in areas of rampant violence, waiting to cross in deplorable humanitarian conditions.
MSF has been working since 2012, providing basic medical and mental health care to thousands of people crossing Mexico, from different shelters along the route. Our teams have documented a pattern of violent displacement, persecution, sexual violence and forced repatriation. It’s a violence that starts in the country of origin and forces people to flee their homes and is replicated also in the route in Mexico where people face abductions, extortions, sexual violence, torture and executions. They are preyed upon by criminal networks, many times with the complicity of the national authorities. The governments of the region should find a solution to protect their people and provide them with adequate humanitarian assistance.
